Lockdown activities for your care home residents

RDB Star Rating was founded in 1997 with the mission of improving the quality of residential care across the UK. In the last two decades, we have become recognised as a benchmarking scheme in the care sector, performing hundreds of care home inspections. With the current COVID-19 lockdown in place, our inspections have had to be postponed.

Fortunately, people across the globe are discovering new activities and hidden talents to keep themselves occupied with their extra time at home. However, many elderly people in care homes across the UK are facing even stronger restrictions to protect their health.

It's a confusing time for everyone, but especially the older generation. With over 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, the new restrictions can bring fear and anxiety to many of Britain's elderly. Routine is a huge part of everyone's life, so finding activities that bring a sense of purpose and excitement to each day is important for both young and old alike.

We've compiled a list of activity ideas for your care residents that will provide some much-needed fun, whilst adhering to social distancing rules!

  1. If you've got access to a laptop, computer or tablet, set up a video call between your residents and their families. With visiting limitations in place, it's really important for residents to feel connected to their loved ones.
  2. To make the most of the lovely sun Britain has been blessed with, why not try your hand at light gardening? Small activities such as potting and seed planting can help with your resident's motor skills and can be very therapeutic!
  3. Painting, drawing, cutting and sticking are all simple yet enjoyable activities that can be done under supervision.
  4. Corridor quizzes and bingo is a very popular and effective method of getting the residents together whilst adhering to social distancing measures.
  5. Birdwatching is a calm activity that could be done alone or in pairs, from either inside or outside the care facility.

Whatever activities you decide to do, it's important to try to stick to routine as much as possible to give your residents a sense of normality. If you're feeling overwhelmed with the resources available, check your local council website, visit Gov.uk or the NHS website.
